It looks like basketball fans in the Windy City might not have to worry about losing All-Star Zach LaVine this offseason. In fact, the Bulls and LaVine are reportedly working towards an agreement on locking in the 27-year-old on a long-term contract.
“Zach LaVine has told people he plans to re-sign with the Bulls,” NBC Sports Chicago Bulls insider K.C. Johnson wrote. “He and the Bulls are expected to quickly work on a five-year max contract worth roughly $215 million. Verbal commitments are allowed before the league moratorium ends on July 6, the date that signings can begin.”
The UCLA product is set to become an unrestricted free agent when the market opens at 6 p.m. ET on Thursday. LaVine underwent arthroscopic surgery in May and is expected to be ready to play when the 2022-2023 season begins in October.
LaVine earned his second consecutive All-Star honor during the 2021-2022 campaign and finished the year with averages of 24.4 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 34.7 minutes per game across 67 contests. He posted a field goal and three-point field goal percentages of 47.6 percent 38.9 percent, slightly down from the 2020-2021 season, but above his career averages.
Aside from LaVine, according to Spotrac, the Bulls have players such as Derrick Jones Jr., Troy Brown Jr. and Tristan Thompson slated to hit unrestricted free agency.
