Juan Soto’s tenure in D.C. may soon be coming to a surprising end.
Throughout this season, the Washington Nationals and Soto have been trying to come to terms on an extension that would keep the 23-year-old superstar with the franchise for most, if not all, of his career. It was seemingly going well in recent weeks, with Soto saying he wanted to stay there long-term. But somewhere along the way, things went sideways, culminating in Soto rejecting a $440 million extension offer, which, in turn, caused the Nats to come out and say that they would now entertain trade offers for the player who was supposed to be the franchise cornerstone for the next 15 years. Compounding the issue, Soto is also nonplussed about the details of the proposed contract leaking out to the media. Washington, to their credit, are reportedly going to make one more offer to Soto, but if he turns that down, a trade becomes likely. IF they do move Soto, the Nats are reportedly looking for “the biggest trade package ever” in a Soto deal, as they should, considering that 23-year-old phenoms simply don’t get traded. But with Soto available, the MLB trade deadline in two weeks could greatly alter the shape of the league for the next decade-plus.
Which brings us to today’s quiz of the day. Soto would bring any number of talents to whatever team trades for him, but his best skill may be his ability to get on base.
