Pittsburgh Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger made it known he believes Kenny Pickett should start at the 3-3 Miami Dolphins this coming Sunday night if the rookie quarterback clears the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed on Tuesday he’s embraced that idea.
“Kenny Pickett is in the concussion protocol,” Tomlin remarked, per Kevin Patra of the league’s website. “It’s my understanding that his work won’t be limited in any way in preparation. We will adhere to the protocol and will follow that and let that be our guide in terms of participation. I’ll say this, if he’s cleared to play, he’ll play. He’ll play quarterback for us. In the meanwhile, we’ll ready ourselves. He’ll be a full participant, it’s my understanding, tomorrow, and so we’ll have him and Mitch [Trubisky] working at the quarterback position.”
Pickett went down with a concussion during this past Sunday’s 20-18 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and was replaced by Trubisky, Pittsburgh’s Week 1 starter who was benched during the Week 4 game against the New York Jets. Trubisky completed 9-of-12 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown against Tampa Bay to help Pittsburgh improve to 2-4.
It was previously thought Tomlin could sit Pickett for at least the Week 7 “Sunday Night Football” showdown in Florida as a precaution. One thing Tomlin made clear on Tuesday is that a healthy Pickett won’t return to QB2 duties anytime soon.
“We’re not going to blow in the wind,” Tomlin added during his comments. “We’re going to be somewhat steady. I’ve been consistent in my messaging regarding decision-making in that position. I think it helps those that are playing. I think it helps the team in terms of who to follow. We’re not going to flip the script now.”
Following Week 7, the Steelers will play at the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles on Oct. 30 before their bye.
