Sarah Huckabee Sanders was condemned for saying ‘We will make sure when a kid is in the womb, they are as safe as in the classroom’ just hours after the Uvalde massacre.
The Arkansas gubernatorial candidate made the remarks on May 24 – hours after the shootings in Texas killed 19 children and two teachers – in a nod to her hardline anti-abortion stance.
Sanders, who served as White House Press Secretary under Donald Trump, was fully aware of the unfolding tragedy, and prefaced the pro-life comment with: ‘The events that took place in Texas are a stark and humbling reminder of just how precious life is, and what an incredible given that each of us has been given by our creator.’
Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter was a victim of the 2018 Parkland shooting, was among those to call Sanders out on Twitter after her remarks re-emerged Sunday in the wake of last week’s Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
‘My daughter was murdered in her classroom,’ he tweeted. ‘When @SarahHuckabee says ‘We will make sure that when a kid is in the womb, they’re as safe as they are in a classroom’ I take notice. Sarah, your bullshit is deadly to kids when they are born.’

Sanders’ Democrat opponent, Chris Jones, posted the clip on Twitter on Sunday.
‘These were Sarah Huckabee Sanders’s words on the day of the Uvalde massacre. She would be disastrous for Arkansas and the nation.

Social media users called Sanders out for her ‘hypocrisy’ and urged the people of Arkansas to not fall for her rhetoric and remember her comments at election time.
‘Over 200 mass shootings in America this year. More than 2 dozen school shootings. 19 dead kids in Uvalde. Guns are the leading cause of death of kids in America,’ tweeted political commentator Wajahat Ali.
‘Every single life has value and the most vulnerable among us are the ones we should be fighting for and protecting the most,’ Sanders said during her speech back in May.
‘I can assure you that in my administration, that’s exactly what we will do. We will make sure that when a kid is in the womb, they’re as safe as they are in the classroom, the workplace, the nursing home, because every stage of life has value.’
Last Friday, Sanders praised the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade, calling it ‘a day so many of us have prayed for and worked towards’ for decades.
‘I am thankful for the brave resolve of the six justices who—while receiving death threats and extreme political pressure—did what is right: defending the lives of the most innocent and vulnerable,’ Sanders tweeted.
