Despite her marriage to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle is deeply involved in US politics.
She is a passionate advocate for human rights. Also, she is an American, and she lives here.
Like all of us, the Duchess of Sussex is horrified by rampant gun violence claiming innocent lives across our nation.
To that end, Meghan is lending her platform to a parent-led gun control organization to amplify their voices and goal.
In the wake of May’s horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, Meghan Markle paid a private visit to the location.
The elementary school where the massacre took place is slated for demolition, but the community will never forget.
Meghan has sent a letter of support to members of the Moms Demand Action movement.
Activist Shannon Watts founded Moms Demand Action in 2012, in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre.
Not even that national tragedy was enough to spur the nation to enact meaningful legislation to prevent further tragedies.
Obviously, Meghan hopes that this time will ultimately prove to be different.
Meghan wrote to offer “a huge thank you for the work you are doing.”
She knows that Moms Demand Action aims “to keep our kids, families, and communities safe.”
After the brutal shooting deaths of 22 innocents, the world could use more safety.
Last month, one 18-year-old gunman stormed into a school building with a legally purchased assault weapon.
Hours later, 19 children and two teachers were dead.
Because of the destructive power of the weapon, authorities relied upon DNA to identify some victims.
Behavior by police during the crisis and their subsequent refusal to cooperate have raised alarming questions.
Regardless of the police conduct, at least most of the victims died by the lone gunman’s hand.
If anyone can continue to purchase these weapons of war, these tragedies will happen again and again and again.
Meghan acknowledged that Uvalde is “a community experiencing unimaginable grief.”
The United States government is in the process of enacting historic, long-overdue gun control legislation.
To be clear, this legislation will not be enough on its own.
It is, however, progress, and a step in the right direction. It will save lives.
Lawmakers and their constituents alike are at a loss, however, when it comes to larger solutions.
This week, the United States Supreme Court — which a growing number of Americans view as illegitimate — gutted gun control.
SCOTUS overturned a century-old New York law, enabling widespread “open carry” against the wishes of states.
While it did not end up being the worst SCOTUS decision this week, it will certainly lead to more deaths.
Inevitably, some of those deaths will be children.
Some trolled Meghan after her visit to Uvalde.
These detractors accused her of a “PR stunt.”
We should remember that Meghan is an American mother. She’s thinking of her own children.
