As our energy bills grow so does the clamour to find ways of reducing our electricity usage.
The cost of living crisis has already seen an increase in sales of money-saving items from air fryers to Oodies.
Now, as the weather cools, electric blankets are getting a huge amount of attention online – and it’s no wonder.
Based on the most recent Ofgem figures and the current energy price cap, which came into effect on October 1, running an electric blanket for one hour each day for seven days only costs about 24p.
If you did this every day for a full year, it would cost an impressive £12.48, apparently proving that you can stay warm at night for a reasonable price.
That compares well to a 2kW electric heater, for example, which costs 68pm an hour to run, according to Ideal Home.
Google searches for “electric blankets” have spiked 1,205 per cent this month compared to the average over the past five years.
According to A-Plan Insurance, electric blankets have also been searched the greatest number of times this year, compared to any year since 2004.
Why are electric blankets seen as a good alternative for heating your home?
Low cost:
On average, electric blankets have a low purchase cost of under £50; this can be combined with a low running cost.
Research has shown that using an electric blanket for one hour a day, every day of the week, for a year would cost £10.19.
Targeted heating:
Many turn the heating on for their whole home, even when sitting in one room.
An electric blanket is much more efficient for heating the room you are in, or just yourself, without having to turn the heating on.
Control:
Some electric blankets can have a timer, which is a great way to save energy by setting a strict period.
They also have a variable temperature setting, which can mean you only need to heat it to the temperature that keeps you warm, nothing too extreme.
James Haynes, Branch Manager at A-Plan Insurance, said: “The UK has already dealt with skyrocketing bills over the past few months due to inflation and the soaring costs of wholesale oil.
“Now, we’re having to face the stark reality of the energy price increase in October.
“In our current financial climate, people find themselves watching their smart meters when they turn on an appliance, avoiding turning the heating on altogether or finding alternative ways to heat their homes due to the soaring energy bills.
“According to GOV.UK, the average household in Great Britain will spend £2,500 on their energy bill.
“Despite the new price cap that went into effect on the 1st of October, this price is still much higher than in previous years.
“‘Electric blankets’ seeing a peak in searches compared to the past five years shows that many Brits are seeking ways to save money before the colder months hit.
“There are several options to save money. However, purchasing an electric blanket is a quick and hassle-free choice.”
