The Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, UT is scheduled to play in its first game of the 2022 Little League World Series on Friday afternoon.
The Mountain Region representative will be down one player and likely have a lot on their minds as they take the field in Williamsport, PA.
12-year-old pitcher/outfielder Easton Oliverson had to undergo emergency surgery after suffering a severe head injury following a fall from the top of a bunkbed early Monday morning. According to an ESPN report, Oliverson was airlifted to a children’s hospital in the state, where he remains in intensive care.
“He went through pretty traumatic surgery to get to where he’s at, but the doctors are all really positive,” Oliverson’s uncle, Spencer Beck said, per the Salt Lake Tribune. “All of the steps moving forward have been good so far.”
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, the Snow Canyon squad is the first team from Utah to ever make the Little League World Series. Beck told the newspaper that Oliverson’s fall woke up one of his teammates, who notified others.
“Had that other player not been wakened by him falling, he may not have made it,” Beck said.
Oliverson’s family said that he also suffered fractures to his skull and cheekbone. According to the newspaper, Oliverson remains in the ICU while doctors wait for swelling in his brain to decrease.
