Julie Andrews reveals she would be willing to make a third Princess Diaries film

Julie Andrews said she would be willing to take another trip to Genovia for The Princess Diaries 3, but the story would have to be right. 

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet ahead of her American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award, the 86-year-old actress hinted at what it would take for her to reprise the role as queen Clarisse Rinaldi.

‘It depends what the story is, and if they can come up with something, that would be wonderful,’ she said.

But knowing how difficult it is to get lighting to strike three times, especially since it’s been nearly 20 years since The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement hit the big screen, the Oscar winner added the caveat, ‘But if not, there will be other things.’

The Mary Poppins star played the dowager queen of Genovia in the original The Princess Diaries, who was ruling the country until her granddaughter could take over the throne. 

Anne Hathaway, played Mia, in her breakout performance as an awkward high schooler who learns she’s actually a her royal highness.

Box office: The Princess Diaries was a huge hit, making more than $185 million worldwide. The follow-up, The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement made an engaging $135.7 million

The 2001 film was a huge hit, making more than $185 million worldwide.  The follow-up, The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement made an engaging $135.7 million in 2004. 

In a 2019 interview on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, Anne, who is now the mother of two, Jonathan, 6, and Jack, 2, confessed she was up for the job.

‘There is a script for the third movie. There is a script. I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. ‘It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.’

Now that three years have passed since that interview, Julie is a little more reticent, saying, ‘I don’t know, I think I’m the one — she’s [Anne] probably still okay for it, but I might just be a little too old a granny for it, I don’t know.’ 

Chris Pine, 41, who played Mia’s  frenemy turned love interest, Nicholas Devereaux,  in the second film said in a March interview with Extra that he might sign on, ‘If it’s in Los Angeles, I’ll be there… if it’s in L.A. It’s my hometown. I have a lot of pride.’

Sadly, Garry Marshall, who directed both of The Princess Diaries films passed away in 2016.
