It’s been six weeks since the jury delivered a verdict in the Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard defamation trial.
But the pitched battle between these dueling exes shows no signs of letting up.
In fact, Depp and Heard might soon find themselves back in court, reenacting the drama that’s captivated America for nearly three months.
Earlier today, we reported on the news that Heard is requesting a mistrial.
Attorneys for the actress claim that one of the jurors from the trial was not who he claimed to be.
They say that the juror who showed up in court and helped render the verdict was not the 77-year-old who was summoned, but a much younger relative who shares the same last name and address.
Obviously, if the lawyers are able to prove that (and they say they can), then they would have sufficient grounds for a retrial.
But just in case their efforts to expose the fraudulent juror are unsuccessful, Heard’s attorneys are attacking the legitimacy of the verdict from other angles, as well.
One of those angles is the claim that the amount awarded by the jury was excessive, and should therefore be set aside by the judge.
As you’re probably aware, Depp sued Heard for $50 million, but was awarded just $10.35 million in damages.
Heard’s $100 million counterclaim resulted in her being awarded $2 million in compensatory damages.
Still, she’s left with a staggering $8.35 million debt to Depp, an amount that Heard’s attorneys say she’s unable to pay.
So in a way, Team Heard is hedging their bets:
They’re hoping for a new trial, but in the meantime, they’re working on at least getting the amount of damages of reduced.
But according to a new report from TMZ, Johnny’s lawyers have already fired back with a filing that documents exactly why Amber should have been forced to pay out far more in damages.
Depp’s lawyers say that after Heard published the Washington Post essay in which she identified herself as a victim of domestic abuse, Depp didn’t receive a single offer from a studio for more than two years.
Furthermore, they say that he was in talks to star in a sixth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, which would have paid $22.5 million.
Those talks came to a halt after Heard published her essay, attorneys for Depp claim.
It sounds like Team Depp is well-prepared to argue that the amount Heard is being forced to pay out is not excessive.
Of course, there’s much more at stake here than mere monetary damages.
Depp and Heard are both fighting for their professional lives with the knowledge that whoever loses this case might be considered unemployable by all of the major studios.
Of course, with the number of allegations these two have hurled at one another, it’s possible that neither of them will work again regardless of how things play out in court.
Whatever the case, no matter what roles they take in the future, this is sure to be the drama for which both actors are best remembered.
