The Jacksonville Jaguars may have to start thinking about other plans regarding who will serve as their backup quarterback behind 2021 rookie Trevor Lawrence.

According to Myles Simmons of Pro Football Talk, Jacksonville QB2 C.J. Beathard was carted off the field during Monday’s organized team activities practice. The exact nature of the issue wasn’t known as of early Monday afternoon, but the fact that Beathard apparently couldn’t leave the field on his own power is undeniably worrisome.

Originally selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Beathard put pen to paper on a deal with Jacksonville last spring when it was known the club would grab Lawrence with the first pick of the 2021 player-selection process. Beathard made two cameos during his first season with the Jaguars and completed a pair of passes for 33 yards.

The Jaguars also have unproven commodities Jake Luton and EJ Perry in their quarterback room.

If it’s ultimately learned that Beathard will miss significant time heading into the fall, veteran Cam Newton could be an option for Jacksonville. The 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player was recently linked with a return to the Carolina Panthers and also with the Seattle Seahawks, but it’s unclear if Newton is willing to sign on as a backup who would only play if the starter picks up an injury.
