Winter is, once again, coming to HBO.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the cable network has entered into early development on its first-ever sequel to Game of Thrones.
The proposed series would bring back Kit Harington in the iconic role of Jon Snow, the main protagonist on the original drama.
The actor was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for his portrayal of an action hero … who struggles to uphold his family’s noble values in a brutal and violent world.
Game of Thrones largely told the story of this character, who was created by author George R.R. Martin and who was first believed to be the bastard child of Lord of Winterfell Ned Stark.
He was then revealed (SPOILER ALERT!) to be a Targaryen descendant as the offspring of Ned’s sister Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.
Snow was the rightful heir to the legendary throne of Westeros.
Toward the end of the truly awful final season of Game of Thrones, Jon murdered Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and was exiled to the Night’s Watch.
The final shot of the entire show centered on Snow leading what remains of the Free Folk in their journey settle in the free lands.
Two years ago, after Game of Thrones signed off with a very bad finale, Harington clapped back against critics of the way the program ended.
He went after them hard, too.
“How I feel about the show right now is quite defiant,” the star told Esquire in May 2019, explaining in more detail:
“I think no matter what anyone thinks about this season – and I don’t mean to sound mean about critics here – but whatever critic spends half an hour writing about this season and makes their [negative] judgement on it, in my head they can go f-ck themselves.”
Why did Harrington feel this way?
“‘Cause I know how much work was put into this.”
Since completing his work across eight seasons of Game of Thrones, Harington has appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, co-starring in 2021’s Eternals.
He also recently starred in the title role in the National Theater’s live production of Henry V.
To be clear, this sequel has not yet received a green light from HBO.
No one from the network has commented on the new report, either.
The network, meanwhile, is moving ahead on House of the Dragon, which is the next Game of Thrones TV series.
It’s a prequel set 200 years before the events of the original drama that focuses on the height of the Targaryen empire.
Specifically, this spinoff will hone in on the events leading up to and during the Dance of the Dragons — which was the name the poets of Westeros gave to one of the bloodiest conflicts in the history of the country.
House of the Dragon will premiere August 21 on HBO.
