Carnival brings Amazon rainforest to streets of Rio

Rio de Janeiro’s colourful and energetic Carnival has returned for 2024, with floats and performances celebrating the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous communities of Brazil

Six of Rio’s top samba schools paraded down the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí on Sunday evening.

One samba school paid tribute to the country’s largest Indigenous group, the Yanomami, and the Amazon rainforest during its parade.

Salgueiro school also paid homage to British journalist Dom Phillips and local Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, .

Dom Phillips’ wife, Alessandra Soares, also took part in the parade.
