There’s chatter in the media and elsewhere about whether the Steelers have a quarterback controversy between Kenny Pickett and Mitch Trubisky. Former Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is having none of it.
“If Kenny’s cleared to play this week, Kenny’s starting,” Roethlisberger said Tuesday on his “Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger” podcast. In the third quarter of Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay, Pickett left the game with a concussion. He has yet to clear the concussion protocol.
Trubisky completed nine-of-12 for 144 yards and a touchdown in relief of Pickett.
Roethlisberger believes Trubisky did his job as a backup. Now it’s time for him to take a seat — if Pickett is cleared to return.
“Before he was almost playing not to lose,” Roethlisberger said of Trubisky. “I don’t think Mitch is entering delusion that he’s going to … win the job back.”
The former Steelers star said it’s going to take a lot more for Pittsburgh to consider making another switch at quarterback.
“Even if Kenny goes on this bad streak of playing really bad football for like four or five or six weeks, I don’t think they’re ever going to pull him out,” Roethlisberger added.
In Week 7, the Steelers play on “Sunday Night Football” at Miami.
