It was a year ago when it seemed as if Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers may have played his last down as a member of the organization and could force a trade or even retire. Rodgers, of course, ultimately returned to the franchise and earned the fourth regular-season Most Valuable Player honor of his Hall of Fame career, and the 38-year-old then signed a massive extension with the Packers in March.
While Rodgers recently admitted he thinks about retirement “all the time,” he’s attending mandatory minicamp this week and is seemingly all-in on pursuing his second career Super Bowl ring. Per Rob Demovsky of ESPN, Rodgers was asked on Tuesday if he thinks he’ll retire with the only NFL club he’s personally known since the 2005 draft.
“Yes, definitely,” Rodgers responded.
Demovsky added that Rodgers didn’t necessarily commit to playing beyond the 2022 season.
“If you say I’m for sure playing two more, three years and then you have a magical season that ends with a championship and think that that might be the best way to ride off, I don’t want to commit to something,” Rodgers explained. “You say, I’m only playing one more year and you have a bitter taste in your mouth and still got the drive and the passion to play one or two more years, I just don’t want to get pigeonholed into it.
“So I’m focused on this season. I’m never gonna drag it out in the offseason. The conversations I’ve had with (general manager Brian Gutekunst) have been very honest and direct, and that’s not going to change, and we’ll sit down after the season, hopefully after a championship and figure out what the next step is.”
Second on the depth chart beneath Rodgers is 2020 first-round choice Jordan Love, who is on track to remain a backup for his third pro campaign. The Packers will have to make an important decision about Love’s future and the fifth-year option attached to his rookie contract if Rodgers doesn’t call time on his playing career next winter.
