The ‘No. 1 pick in the MLB Draft’ quiz

Estimated read time 2 min read

In 2013, the Houston Astros selected Mark Appel with the first pick in that year’s draft. He was taken one spot ahead of Kris Bryant and before future superstars such as Aaron Judge, Tim Anderson and Cody Bellinger. Things did not work out in Houston, and he was traded to Philadelphia in late 2015. After dealing with numerous injuries, Appel walked away from the game in 2018, seemingly ending his baseball career before it really got started. In 2021, though, Appel announced he intended on coming back and managed to stick around that season on Philly’s Triple-A and Double-A teams. Fast-forward to this past week when Appel was called up to the big leagues and fired a scoreless inning in relief Wednesday night against the reigning World Series champions. Who knows where Appel’s career goes from here, but even if he never throws another pitch in the show, his story will always be a prime example of what can be accomplished through perseverance and sheer determination to succeed.

Which brings us to today’s quiz of the day. MLB has been holding its annual draft since 1965. Over that period, many of the No. 1 overall selections have gone on to have illustrious careers, while others have been complete busts. How many of them can you name in eight minutes?

Good luck!
