As Mike Florio explained last month for a Pro Football Talk piece, the NFL no longer has any protocols installed regarding COVID-19 even as the BA.5 subvariant is causing a surge in infections throughout the country.
The NFL and NFL Players Association may be finished dealing with the coronavirus, but the first day of August served as a reminder that the ongoing pandemic will continue to impact the league throughout the upcoming preseason, regular season and playoffs.
Per Michael David Smith of PFT, the Seattle Seahawks announced in a statement that head coach Pete Carroll tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend.
“Yesterday, head coach Pete Carroll tested positive for COVID-19,” the Seahawks said on Monday. “He is fully vaccinated and experiencing mild symptoms, while remaining at home. Carroll remains in contact with the coaching staff and will participate in team meetings virtually until he returns to the facility.”
The Seahawks didn’t say when Carroll could be cleared to return to the team facility. Seattle opens the preseason portion of the calendar at the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 13.
Carroll is the NFL’s oldest serving head coach and will turn 71 years old on Sept. 15.
Also on Monday, Arizona Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury told reporters that quarterback Kyler Murray tested positive for COVID-19. Murray will be out for a minimum of five days while dealing with the virus:
