Shortly after Yahoo Sports reported that John Wall agreed to buyout terms with the Houston Rockets, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski said Monday that the five-time All-Star now plans to join the Los Angeles Clippers.
Wall, 31, exercised the $47.4M player option on his contract with the Rockets last week, but a split from the team was expected. Chris Haynes of Yahoo Sports reported Monday that Wall agreed to give back $7M of the salary as part of the buyout agreement, allowing him to reach free agency.
While Wall now has to clear waivers, and there are reportedly other teams interested in acquiring the point guard, he already has decided on Los Angeles as his future destination.
Wall spent the first decade of his career with the Washington Wizards after the team picked him first overall in the 2010 NBA Draft. He earned five consecutive trips to the NBA All-Star Game between 2014 and 2018, averaging 19.1 points, 9.1 assists, and 4.3 rebounds over the course of his tenure with the Wizards.
After missing the entire 2019-20 season due to an Achilles tear, Wall was traded to the Rockets in December 2020 as part of a deal that included Russell Westbrook. He played 40 games with Houston in his first season with the team, but sat out all of the 2021-22 season due to a disagreement over his role.
The Clippers finished last season 42-40, but were eliminated in the Play-In Tournament. The team was without star forward Kawhi Leonard for the entire year due to offseason knee surgery and was also without forward Paul George for more than half the season due to elbow injuries.
