Report: Cardinals building Juan Soto trade package around Nolan Gorman

The MLB trade deadline is less than a week away, so of course rumors about where big-name players are moving are spreading like wildfire. That means that Washington Nationals outfielder Juan Soto is in just about every baseball-related headline as everyone tries to figure out where he will play next.

We might have gotten a hint at his landing spot on Wednesday, as it was reported that the St. Louis Cardinals are the front-runners for landing the Home Run Derby winner at the deadline on August 2 and are actively exchanging names for a trade package.

“Multiple sources have described negotiations between the clubs that includes Cardinals slugging second baseman Nolan Gorman, and a rejoinder from the Nationals that includes starting pitcher Patrick Corbin in an attempt to shed salary,” the Belleville News-Democrat reported

CBS Sports reported last week that Corbin is expected to be part of a trade package for Soto in order to “clear the books” for Washington.

The move to St. Louis would certainly put Soto in a better position to play baseball in October. The Cardinals currently occupy the last Wild Card spot in the National League, while the Nationals sit in the NL cellar and 17.0 games out of a playoff berth.

Soto rejected a record contract from the Nationals before the season started that would have kept him in Washington for another 13 years. When asked about the offer in February, the Dominican outfielder said he wanted to test free agency when his current contract expires in 2025.

“They made me the offer a couple of months ago, before the lockout we have in baseball,” Soto told ESPN’s Enrique Rojas. “But right now, me and my agents think the best option is to go year after year and wait for free agency. My agent, Scott Boras, is in control of that situation.”

Soto is hitting .245/.401/.485 this season with 20 home runs, 45 RBI and 81 hits through 96 games played.
