The public saw a lot of Prince Harry during Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee.
Some of the royal family’s activities only played out behind the scenes, however.
Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle took part in the Jubilee, even receiving protection during the visit.
But Prince William resents their 2020 departure, and reportedly spent “no time” with his brother.
According to a report by The Times, both Prince Harry and Prince William were at St Paul’s Cathedral for the Service of Thanksgiving.
This celebration took place last Friday, of course.
However, the brothers reportedly did not interact, acting like strangers who happened to be at the same event.
Planners may have anticipated this fraternal cold front due to Prince Harry and Prince William’s feud.
Harry and William were seated on opposite sides of the room.
Another aspect of this may be that William remains an acting part of the royal family, while harry has departed.
But there is more than propriety at play when it comes to the gulf between them.
Harry and Meghan left the Firm in early 2020, announcing their departure and then moving to North America.
It was the right thing for their family.
However, according to a friend of William’s, “He’s deeply upset about it and feels let down, but he’s moved on.”
William was reportedly tense ahead of the jubilee.
Of particular concern was the service at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Why? Perhaps because this was the only event that the Sussexes attended publicly.
The report said that William was anxious “because he was incredibly worried about having all the family there.”
“And,” the report continued, “what everyone was going to say.”
“He was so relieved that most of the media made it all about the Queen, Prince Charles, and the children,” the friend added.
“They are the key people,” the report emphasized.
“And,” William’s friend said, “he was really pleased about that.”
Sometimes, siblings simply grow apart as adulthood takes them on different paths.
However, in this case, the rift threatens to spread to the next generation.
It is believed by the public that William and Kate’s children did not meet 3-year-old Archie or 1-year-old Lilibet.
It is always possible that something went down behind closed doors.
The Queen herself might have arranged a private visit for the family.
But not even one of the world’s most powerful grandmothers can heal a family rift overnight.
Harry and Meghan left because of a vicious and racist campaign against Meghan.
William and Harry watched British tabloids destroy their mother. Harry did not want history to repeat itself.
One would hope that William, of all people, would understand.
Perhaps William understands Harry and Meghan’s departure better than they realize.
He could be distancing himself to keep the public attention focused upon the jubilee and off of his sister-in-law.
Some speculate that William may envy Harry.
After all, Harry gets to live a life free of the curse of his birth.
William stands to inherit a crown that many hope will no longer exist by the time that Charles passes.
Harry is enjoying married life in a country where he and Meghan are well-liked while William remains a living mascot.
At the same time, William could feel that Harry abandoned the family and is now speaking out of turn.
But we do not claim, cannot claim, to know what William is thinking.
It’s sad to see an apparent rift. We’re still happy for Harry and Meghan, though.
