As the Northern California region grows, so does the need for healthcare that expands with the population. To meet that growth, Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital (SSRRH; Santa Rosa, Calif.) recently opened a new 58,000-square-foot expansion wing in Santa Rosa.
Designed by Stantec’s Sacramento, San Francisco, San Diego, Seattle, and Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, offices, this major expansion and renovation initiative enhances access to acute hospital services.
The three-story addition is on the east side of the existing two-story hospital and connects at levels one and two. It offers general surgery, bariatric surgery, labor and delivery, intensive care, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, and cardiac services.
This expansion provides an additional 40 licensed private-room beds; one operating room (a second one shelled); an endoscopy and gastroenterology room; 11 post-anesthesia care bays; and specialized conference room spaces for nurse, clinician, and patient learning.
With a larger hospital footprint and a new total bed count of 124, SSRRH can provide increased acute healthcare and outpatient services to the growing Sonoma County.
In an effort to expedite delivery, the building is the first Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) acute care project in California to use a prefabricated, panelized exterior skin system. This solution reduced the overall schedule by four months.
Leveraging the hospital’s recently installed photovoltaic panels, the expansion builds on SSRRH’s commitment to energy independence and is targeting LEED Version 2.2 Verification Treatment.
The facility design features natural lighting throughout and sweeping views of the surrounding community. Expanding the existing hospital’s already robust art program, the new wing contains more than 90 pieces of art, several by local artists.
