Brooks Rehabilitation opened its newest inpatient rehabilitation hospital on its 115-acre Bartram campus in Jacksonville, Fla., in April.

Designed by Gresham Smith (Jacksonville, Fla.), the Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital – Bartram Campus houses services for patients after a stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury, transplant orthopedic surgery, or other disabling illness.

The facility‘s design includes three stories, which separates the patient-centered spaces on the top two floors from the administrative suites and “back-of-house” services on the first floor.

The 76,000-square-foot, 60-bed facility has eight negative air pressure rooms, two therapy gyms, an activities of daily living suite, four-bay dialysis suite, pharmacy with chemotherapy compounding capabilities, and bariatric patient rooms.

To utilize the advantages of nature during the healing process, an outdoor therapy courtyard with several different terrains, including grass, wood, concrete, stone, and turf, helps patients practice walking and wheeling to prepare for when they return home. The courtyard also includes a putting green, hand bike, and tricycle to practice additional leisure activities.

Balconies on the upper two floors provide connections to the outdoors and fresh air.

The interior design uses different color schemes in the active therapy and recovery spaces to create an intuitive and purposeful separation between the two patient areas. Additionally, a comprehensive signage and wayfinding plan allows patients to know when they are headed for active therapy and back to rest and recovery.

In the gyms and dayrooms, a color scheme of vibrant blues and purples, coupled with graphics that speak to the future, generates the feeling of movement and energy that complements the technology found in each space. In the patient rooms, a neutral brown color palette and abstract nature images create a calm, peaceful, and restful atmosphere.

On the west side of the building, self-shading glass in the therapy gyms helps reduce heat gain, keeping energy costs down, while also aiding in keeping patients comfortable during their active therapy sessions.
