Leaders of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital set out to serve the expanded care needs of a rapidly increasing city population in Greenville, S.C.
The solution was an addition to the hospital’s emergency department. Goals for the project included fast treatment, ease of travel, and prioritized access.
McMillan Pazdan Smith (Greenville, S.C.) worked with owner Bon Secours Mercy Health System (Greenville, S.C.) to accommodate 75,000 annual ED visits.
Opened in November 2021, the new ED houses eight fast-track rooms to separate less acute care cases from higher-acuity emergencies. A results pending space was included for patients waiting on results from laboratory work.
All treatment rooms were standardized to promote safe, efficient care. Four treatment rooms include behavioral health accommodations. Additionally, dedicated equipment was added to allow imaging and testing to be completed without leaving the ED.
The Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital project also features a roof-mounted helipad with access to a dedicated trauma elevator to provide direct vertical access into the ED suite for arrivals and transports.
The 45,000-square-foot addition was built to be resilient long-term, as well.
For example, flexible shell space was included on Level 1. This allows for an additional four treatment rooms and provider workspace or could be used to accommodate changing programmatic needs.
Building systems and structural capacity were designed to accommodate future vertical expansion for an additional four floors, too.
