Women’s volleyball player Kim Glass won a silver medal for Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Olympics but is in the headlines on Monday for a much different reason.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Glass took to Instagram to announce that she was the victim of a horrific attack on Friday in downtown Los Angeles. Per the stories, 51-year-old Semeon Tesfamariam threw what was believed to be a metal pipe or bolt that struck Glass in the face. Her right eye was left completely closed, and she required stitches near her eyebrow.

“I do have multiple fractures,” Glass explained in one social-media video. She added that the man “just like looked at me with some pretty hateful eyes.”

“It happened so fast, he literally flung it from the street, he was not even close to me at all,” she continued during her comments. “As I turned to tell my friend, ‘I think something’s wrong with him and I think he’s going to hit the car’ — before I knew it, a big metal bolt-like pipe hit me.”

She also said that individuals who witnessed the incident “got him and held him down until the cops came.”

Fortunately, Glass noted she expects her vision will eventually return to normal.

Los Angeles police spokesperson officer Drake Madison confirmed to The AP that Tesfamariam was booked on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon.
