Cale Gundy’s run as the longest-tenured coach in Big 12 football came to an end this week as the longtime Oklahoma Sooners coach resigned over the weekend in the midst of controversy.
Gundy, 50, posted a lengthy statement on Twitter to explain the event that lead to his resignation. According to the post and corresponding reports, Gundy was reading off of a player’s iPad during a film session and read aloud “a word that I should never — under any circumstance — have uttered.” Gundy did not specify what word he read aloud.
“I want to be very clear: the words I read aloud from that screen were not my words. What I said was not malicious; it wasn’t even intentional,” the statement reads. “Still, I am mature enough to know that the word I said was shameful and hurtful, no matter my intentions.”
Gundy added that he was resigning so that he wouldn’t be a distraction to the team.
“I recognize this is a critical moment for Oklahoma football,” he wrote, saying the team doesn’t deserve to be distressed by “off-th-field matters.”
Gundy has received support from various members of the football world, including Cincinnati Bengals running back and former Sooner Joe Mixon, who posted a lengthy statement of his own in support of his former coach.
Gundy played quarterback at Oklahomas from 1990 to 1993 and returned to coach at the school in 1999. He spent 16 years as the running backs coach and seven years coaching inside receivers. He was assistant head coach when he resigned over the weekend.
