Australian Nick Kyrgios defeated Paul Jubb 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, 6-7 (3-7), 7-5 in Tuesday’s first-round Wimbledon men’s singles match but was in the news after that result for spitting in the direction of a fan he said heckled him throughout his win.
Kyrgios didn’t make contact with that spectator but nevertheless will have to pay for his crime.
Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the All England Club has fined Kyrgios $10,000 for unsportsmanlike conduct.
“Today, as soon as I won the match, I turned to him … I’ve been dealing with hate and negativity for a long time, so I don’t feel like I owed that person anything,” Kyrgios told reporters shortly after Tuesday’s victory. “He literally came to the match to literally just, like, not even support anyone really. It was more just to stir up and disrespect. That’s fine. But if I give it back to you, then that’s just how it is.”
As Liam O’Loughlin of The Sporting News Australia pointed out, Tuesday’s events clearly didn’t shake Kyrgios. The 27-year-old thumped Filip Krajinovic in the second round to the tune of 6-2, 6-3, 6-1 and will next face Stefanos Tsitsipas.
“I’ve been playing some really good tennis over the last month,” Kyrgios said during his latest on-the-court post-win comments. “I was really surprised the way I played the other day, it wasn’t great. There was a lot of positives — I didn’t play anywhere near my best and got through it. Today obviously, I was kind of in my zone and just great body language and just played well. I just wanted to remind everyone that I’m pretty good.”
