A big storyline for the 76ers last season was Tyrese Maxey’s breakout performance. After becoming a full-time starter, he showed why he can be valuable for years to come. Maxey averaged 17.5 points, 4.3 assists and 3.2 rebounds in 35.3 minutes over 75 games. He also ranked third in the league in three-point percentage at 42.7 percent, behind the Clippers’ Luke Kennard (44.9 percent) and Grizzlies’ Desmond Bane (43.6 percent).

Maxey is getting recognition across the NBA. Bleacher Report recently ranked its most exciting young prospects at every position. Maxey was No. 1 among shooting guards over Rockets phenom Jalen Green, the second overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Green averaged 17.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in 31.9 minutes over 67 games last season.

Tyrese Maxey talked about his new teammates

Maxey took time out from his demanding offseason training regimen to give back to the community. He recently hosted a free summer camp at the 76ers’ training complex, where he answered questions from the media. Maxey talked about how the new players brought in by president of basketball operations Daryl Morey will help the 76ers be tougher physically and mentally.

With the trade of Danny Green to the Grizzlies, the 76ers needed to add a player with playoff experience, so they signed P.J. Tucker. He helped the Bucks win the NBA title in 2021. Last season, he averaged 7.6 points for the Heat.

Another underrated move was the addition of De’Anthony Melton, who was part of the Green trade to Memphis. Melton is coming off the best season of his career. He averaged 10.8 points and 4.5 rebounds in 22.7 minutes over 73 games, shooting an efficient 37.4 percent from beyond the arc.

“I think they’ll also help with just the physical toughness,” Maxey said. “The grit and the grind that we need to bring to our team and also, I think guys like P.J., he’s gonna bring the championship mentality. I think we’re really gonna appreciate him for that.”
