It was reported last week that superstar Lionel Messi had informed current employers Paris Saint-Germain that he would not discuss a contract extension or new deal with the club until after the fall World Cup held in Qatar, and that led some to speculate that the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner could be considering moving on and possibly signing for a Major League Soccer side, specifically Inter Miami.

Messi has been linked with the club co-owned by David Beckham since as far back as last summer and is currently set to be out of contract following the upcoming season. Per an ESPN piece, Inter Miami chief business officer Xavier Asensi recently hinted to El Mundo Deportivo that targeting the 35-year-old is one of his objectives.

“Yes, with some caveats. You can’t compare Leo Messi with any other player; he’s different,” Asensi reportedly responded when asked about the possibility of signing a big name such as the all-time great. “Having said that, what we’re looking for is to be the reference point for football in the U.S., and to do that, the important thing is the players and the show that you can put on.

“To do so, you need the best players, and having them is a genuine objective at this club. In terms of Leo Messi, there’s him and then there’s everyone else.”

For the piece, Asensi was asked if signing somebody such as Messi is a realistic goal for the MLS side.

“It depends on him and what he wants,” Asensi answered. “We want to have the best players in the world, and I think Messi is the best in history. From there it’s up to him. We want to be the reference point for football in the U.S., that’s one of the objectives of the organization.”

Messi is first concentrating on bolstering his form and fitness as he prepares to lead Argentina into the World Cup. He originally signed with Paris Saint-Germain last August and went on to tally 11 goals in 34 games in his first season with the French giants.
