As Rooney Mara said to Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network, “The internet isn’t written in pencil; it’s written in ink.”
Errors in judgment from 20 years ago can feel as fresh as much more recent mistakes as a result of a single resurfaced screenshot.
And that’s a lesson that Khloe Kardashian is learning the hard way this week.
Although to be fair, the screenshot in question is very, very offensive, and Khloe can’t chalk it up to a mere mistake, as she clearly put a lot of thought into the stunt.
Yes, what you’re looking at is a photo of Khloe dressed as a pimp with four Black women on leashes as her prostitutes.
Now, in the interest of complete fairness, we should note that the photo was taken on Halloween in 2003.
But hopefully, we don’t need to tell you that neither of those facts makes it acceptable.
The photo resurfaced on Reddit this week, and needless to say, people are outraged.
“Does anyone legit know why she did this? I can’t handle it,” one commenter remarked.
“Can someone fill me in on this mess? Khloe, dressed . . . as a pimp?” another asked.
“Seriously every time I see this pic I’m like, who thought this was a good idea?!!! Just whyyyy,” a third chimed in.
Others noted that Khloe’s appearance has changed considerably in the years since she carried out this regrettable stunt.
“I didn’t even see that at first. I just thought it was a bad photo of her because she looks so different. She had black women on leashes?” one person inquired.
“She’s a pimp with her hoes? Wow, racist much,” yet another exclaimed.
Many, if not most, of the comments came in the form of questions:
Why did this happen? How in the hell did Khloe think this was a good idea?
Sadly, answers have been hard to come by.
As far as anyone can tell, a 19-year-old Khloe simply thought this was a funny idea for a Halloween costume.
She was wrong, obviously, and the photo has sparked an intense debate over what sort of conduct should be forgiven and what sort should result in some permanent form of “cancelation.”
Khloe’s case is not helped by the fact that this is not her only recent race-related controversy.
Earlier this year, old footage emerged in which Khloe appeared to use the n-word.
The slur was allegedly uttered during a conversation in which Khloe became outraged after learning that Kim was being criticized for appropriating Black culture.
“Hashtag fact: My baby is black,” Khloe raged.
“Hashtag I only like black c – – k. That’s what I would say.”
While some viewers insist that they heard the slur, others claim that the audio is misleading.
“Dear @hulu,” author Stephanie Sidley tweeted in response to the scene, according to The New York Post.
“If you continue to enable the Kardashian family and give them a platform, I will cancel your service. I will never condone racism or bullying the way the Kardashian/Jenner family continues to perpetuate.”
It’s too soon to say what the future holds for Khloe following this latest controversy.
There’s widespread disagreement with regard to how best to handle the situation.
But hey, at least everyone can agree that Khloe looked insanely different in 2003.
