Hairspray director John Waters revealed that he once bumped into the late Angela Lansbury at a New York City sex club that catered to ‘gay and straight perverts alike.’

The 76-year-old originally recalled seeing the legendary actress – who passed away last week at 96 – at a sex club called Hellfire in the eighties, in his 2019 book Mr. Know-It-All: The Tarnished Wisdom of a Filth Elder.

The filmmaker recently commented on the saucy story, telling Page Six: ‘It may have been the only night she was ever there, but just her presence made Hellfire a little more welcoming.’

He also added, ‘[Angela] was pure class even forty years ago when these kind of clubs were all the rage.’

Meanwhile LGBTQ Nation’s Ed Gunts recalled a promotional tour Waters did for his book, where he shared more about the time he saw Lansbury.

During the tour Waters made sure to note that the Murder She Wrote star was at the sex club only to hang out, and not to partake in any of the action.

‘Everybody went. She wasn’t doing anything. Hellfire was a straight, gay bar [where] people had sex. You would be standing there talking about the new novel of Alain Robbe-Grillet, and a [penis] would come through a glory hole and then you just move down,’ he went on.

He shared more about the atmosphere at the club, ‘You might be sitting there talking to somebody and look down and someone’s licking your shoe. You just kick them away. But then they like that so then you had to say “thanks!” and then they would go away.’ 

The Pink Flamingos director also remembered seeing Andy Warhol and Truman Capote as well as ‘lots of celebrities’ at the spot.

Lansbury died a week ago at the age of 96, just five days before her 97th birthday. The Irish-British and American actress, famed for her roles in Murder, She Wrote and Beauty and the Beast passed away peacefully at her home in Los Angeles early on Tuesday morning, her three children revealed. 

Lansbury became a legend in Hollywood and on Broadway during a career that spanned an impressive eight decades and saw her taking on roles alongside some of the industry’s best-known stars.

She was best known for her portrayal of mystery writer and amateur detective, Jessica Fletcher in the CBS series Murder, She Wrote, which ran from 1984-1996. For her role on the program, Lansbury was nominated for ten Golden Globes, winning four.

In 2013, she received an Honorary Academy Award in recognition of her 80 year acting career.
