Former New York Mets minor league prospect is killed in Dominican Republic after the 21-year-old crashed his SUV into a bridge and fell in a ditch

A former prospect in the New York Mets minor league system was killed in an automobile accident in the Dominican Republic on Wednesday.

Darwyn Encarnación, 21, was driving his Honda CRV when he crashed into a section of the Arenoso Bridge in the north central municipality of La Vega.

The impact of the crash sent the SUV into a cobblestone ditch below the bridge.

He was pulled out from the wrecked vehicle and was rushed to Juan Bosch Hospital, where  doctors attempted to save his life before he was declared dead, El Diario Libre newspaper reported.

Encarnación was signed as an international free agent in March 2019 by the Mets.  

“He was a great human being, very disciplined, respectful and polite. He played with us for just one year, in 2019,” a team official with the club’s Dominican Republic academy told MLB insider Héctor Gómez.

As part of his contract signing, New York also provided Encarnación a scholarship and he was studying at a local university following his release. 

Encarnación played 35 games with the Mets’ Dominican Summer League affiliate in 2019.

The outfielder hit .248 with one home run and eight RBI in the 35 games he appeared in for the two teams that the Mets fielded in the Rookie-level league.
