The San Antonio Spurs were involved in arguably the biggest move of the NBA summer thus far on Wednesday when they traded All-Star guard Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks. On Thursday, it was reported that they may soon make an addition to their coaching staff, and it’ll be a face that Spurs fans are plenty familiar with.
Brown was most recently seen on the Philadelphia 76ers’ bench, holding the team’s head-coaching gig from August 2013 to August 2020. During his tenure in Philly — his only NBA head-coaching job to date — Brown registered a 221-334 record in the regular season and a 12-14 mark in the playoffs.
The 61-year-old was at the center of “The Process” era with the Sixers, showcased by three consecutive seasons of fewer than 20 wins and four straight with under 30 victories, accompanied with multiple No. 1 overall picks. Philadelphia had back-to-back years with No. 3 overall picks (selecting Joel Embiid in 2014 and Jahlil Okafor in 2015) and back-to-back drafts with No. 1 selections (Ben Simmons in 2016 and Markelle Fultz in 2017).
The Sixers broke through with three straight playoff appearances under Brown from 2018 to 2020 but never made it past the second round. Prior to his time in Philadelphia, Brown served as an assistant under Gregg Popovich from 2004 to 2013, earning three NBA championship rings.
