Doja Cat is one of the biggest recording artists in the world at the moment, and she’s almost as famous for her ultra-candid social media presence as for her music.
But that same frankness landed the rapper in hot water this week, thanks to an unexpected feud with one of the teenage stars of Netflix’s Stranger Things.
And it all started when Doja developed a crush on one of the show’s most beloved actors.
If you watched the show’s most recent season, then you probably remember Joseph Quinn’s charismatic performance as Eddie Munson.
Like millions of others, Doja was charmed by Quinn’s screen presence.
But unlike most fans, she was in a position to reach out to Quinn by sliding into his DMs, as the kids say.
Unfortunately, Ms. Cat couldn’t locate Quinn’s Instagram page, so she reached out to 17-year-old series lead Noah Schnapp for assistance.
“Noah can u tell Joseph to hmu,” Doja wrote to Noah on Instagram, adding:
“Wait no. does he have a gf?”
Noah encouraged Doja to “slide into” Quinn’s DMs, and he then directed her to his co-star’s page.
He later shared a screenshot of the conversation, which was probably a mistake, but to be fair, the kid’s 17, and he was clearly amused by the situation.
That’s when Doja lashed out at Schnapp in manner that’s since been widely criticized.
“When you’re that young, you make mistakes, you do dumb shit. I’m trying to be super fair,” she said on TikTok Live.
“You do dumb sh-t. You say dumb sh-t. You fuck up relationships with people. You make mistakes. You’re supposed to do stuff like that so you know not to do it in the future. I did my share of fuckups so I don’t f-ck up again.”
Unfortunately, Doja concluded on a hostile note, referring to Noah as a “weasel” and a “snake.”
“The fact that Noah did that, went and posted a private conversation between me and him, is so unbelievably socially unaware and wack,” she said.
“That’s, like, borderline snake shit. That’s, like, weasel shit.”
Not surprisingly, those remarks earned Doja some swift and harsh criticism.
In fact, it seems the rapper may have underestimated just how much Noah’s fan base overlaps with her own.
Several outlets have now reported that Doja lost 200,000 followers in a matter of days, seemingly as a result of the insults she directed at Schnapp.
Noah initially remained mum on the situation, but he eventually felt compelled to speak out in Doja’s defense
“Guys everything is all good I apologized and I still follow her and love her music no hard feelings,” he told his TikTok followers this week.
We’re sure that fans are happy to know that Doja has apologized but this might be a tough controversy for the rapper to overcome.
In addition to those who were offended by her remarks about Noah, there are many who believe that it was inappropriate for the 26-year-old mega-star to involve a teenager in her dating life.
Regardless of your personal feelings on the situation, hopefully we can all agree that this is just a situation in which one faux pas snowballed into an increasingly messy scandal.
