Colin Kaepernick is unlikely to find himself on an NFL field anytime soon, despite the fact that he says he’s ready and able to play. That’s not stopping him from staying involved in the world of professional athletics, though.
He’s reportedly willing to put his money where his mouth is.
Shams Charania is reporting that Kaepernick will become an investor in Ice Cube’s BIG3 league.
While the BIG3 is a far stretch from actual NBA basketball based on the fact that it’s a three-on-three league alone, Ice Cube’s experiment has garnered some serious talent over the years. Sure, players like Rashard Lewis, Mario Chalmers, Michael Beasley, Ricky Davis, Jason Richardson and Joe Johnson may be old news as far as the NBA is concerned (or just plain, old), but these are still players with actual NBA experience on a wide-open court.
The BIG3 also boasts extremely familiar faces as coaches, from Julius “Dr. J” Erving to Gilbert Arenas.
Notably, Charania reports that Ice Cube’s operation was on the verge of shutting down, but the infusion of money from Kaepernick should keep it operational and “growing” moving forward.
There might be backlash to Kaepernick’s involvement due to the social controversy that has surrounded him since he decided to kneel during the national anthem as a protest before NFL games.
That risk is likely worth the financial reward for a league like the BIG3, though.
