The Kansas City Chiefs are adding another wide receiver to their offense before the NFL trade deadline by acquiring Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants on Thursday afternoon.
In exchange for Toney, a 2021 first-round pick, the Chiefs are sending a compensatory third-round pick in 2022 and a sixth-round pick to the Giants.
The compensatory pick is one the Chiefs acquired for allowing Ryan Poles to exit the organization to become the Chicago Bears’ general manager.
Toney’s biggest issue with the Giants during his first two years has been health, and he has not played since Week 2 of this season. He has caught just two passes this season after catching 39 for 420 yards as a rookie.
He still has a lot of potential and will give Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense another weapon to utilize in their passing game.
The Chiefs have significantly overhauled their wide receiver room over the past few months. After trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins for a bounty of draft picks, the Chiefs added Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdez-scantling in free agency and then drafted Skyy Moore in the second round.
Now they have Toney coming in to join that group and tight end Travis Kelce.
The Chiefs’ offense has not missed a beat with all of the changes and is still averaging 403 yards per game (second-best in the league) and 31.9 points per game (best in the NFL). They already have three 40-point games this season, including this past Sunday’s 44-23 win over the San Francisco 49ers.
Kansas City is on a bye week this week and returns next week for a home game against the Tennessee Titans.
