The Boston Celtics came up two wins short of their winning their 18th NBA title in June, which would’ve broken a tie with their rivals — the Los Angeles Lakers — atop of the league for the most championships all-time. The team has reportedly agreed to a massive trade that fans in Beantown will hope can put them over the top in 2023.
The trade is the first significant move of the offseason for president of basketball operations Brad Stevens, head coach Ime Udoka and company, after they chose Alabama’s JD Davison with their lone selection of last week’s NBA Draft. Brogdon had been rumored to be on the block, as Shams Charania noted two weeks ago that the Pacers were “seriously discussing” trades surround the 29-year-old guard, as well as star big man Myles Turner.
After being taken by the Milwaukee Bucks in the second round of the 2016 NBA Draft, Brogdon finished his debut season with 10.2 points, 4.2 assists, 2.8 rebounds and 1.1 steals per game across 75 games (28 starts) while posting a .457/.404/.865 shooting line and was named the Rookie of the Year. During his third and final season with the Bucks, Brogdon led the league in free throw percentage at 92.8 percent, which is still a career-high.
The former Virginia Cavalier was sent to Indiana in July 2019 and helped the Pacers reach the postseason in “The Bubble,” where he averaged a double-double of 21.5 points and 10.0 assists in a first-round sweep at the hands of the Miami Heat. Brogdon was limited to a career-low 36 games last season due to an Achilles injury, but still averaged 19.1 points, 5.9 assists and 5.1 rebounds per contest, while posting a .448/.312/.856 shooting line.
