After some controversy, the Arizona Cardinals have removed an “independent study” clause from star quarterback Kyler Murray’s contract extension, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Murray agreed to a five-year, $230.5M contract extension on July 21. However, Murray’s new deal included a clause mandating four hours of independent film study per week, drawing criticism from the media and fans while creating doubts about Murray’s commitment to football.
On Thursday, before the Cardinals removed the clause, Murray responded to comments about his study habits, calling it “disrespectful” and “almost a joke.”
Murray, 24, was drafted No. 1 overall by the Cardinals in 2019.
In just his third NFL season, Murray earned his second-consecutive Pro Bowl nod in 2021. In 14 regular-season games, Murray finished with 333 completions for 3,787 yards with 24 touchdowns and ten interceptions.
Murray helped lead the Cardinals to a 9-5 record, clinching a wildcard playoff spot in the NFC. Though, Murray struggled in his first-career postseason start, going just 19-for-34 for 137 yards and two interceptions in a 34-11 loss to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Los Angeles Rams.
