Seven-time WNBA All-Star Brittney Griner wrote a letter to the White House on Monday, July 4, directly appealing to President Joe Biden for her freedom, according to ESPN’s T.J. Quinn.

Griner, 31, has been in Russian custody since she was arrested at a Moscow-area airport in February on drug charges for allegedly bringing vape cartridges containing hashish oil into the country. She reportedly faces as many as 10 years in prison if she’s found guilty at a trial that began earlier this month.

In excerpts of her handwritten letter that were revealed Monday, Quinn said Griner wrote “I’m terrified I might be here forever.”

“On the 4th of July, our family normally honors the service of those who fought for our freedom, including my father who is Vietnam War Veteran,” part of the letter reads, via Quinn. “It hurts thinking about how I usually celebrate this day because freedom means something completely different to me this year.

“I realize you are dealing with so much, but please don’t forget about me and the other American Detainees. Please do all you can to bring us home. I voted for the first time in 2020 and I voted fro you. I believe in you. I still have so much good to do with my freedom that you can help restore. I miss my wife! I miss my family! I miss my teammates! It kills me to know they are suffering so much right now. I am grateful for whatever you can do at this moment to get me home.”

Griner, who has played for the Phoenix Mercury since getting drafted first overall in 2013, has spent several WNBA offseasons playing in the Russian Premier League. She was traveling to Russia to play for UMMC Yekaterinburg.
