CBS got the ball rolling on Big Brother Season 24 Wednesday night.
The iconic reality show returned with 16 new houseguests, a wealth of twists, and some shocking competitions.
Coming off the widely praised Big Brother 23, the premiere needed to showcase the best of the new cast to get viewers intrigued for the season ahead, and it was a decent enough job.
Part of the allure of the series has been in the contestants and whether they bring the drama required to make good television.
Julie wasted no time introducing the first four houseguests to the hotel-themed house.
Jasmine describes herself as a “Southern Belle” who grew up on a farm and now runs her own nail business.
Based on the first moments of her video, she’s going to be one of the houseguests to watch, but she could find herself feeling the ire of the other cast members.
We hope not, but you heard it here first!
Kyle is an ex-Mormon whose aim in life is to dance on TikTok. Yes, really.
He seems like a lot of fun, but maybe a little too much, which won’t bode well if he rubs any of his fellow houseguests the wrong way.
Paloma is in real estate and interior design. She’s bubbly, and that’s a major positive in this game.
Monte is big on fitness and very easy on the eyes.
At Julie’s request, the quartet made their way into the house and retrieved a ticket to determine which competition they would participate in.
Big Brother is zeroing in on a festival theme, which means there are plenty of different competitions to try out.
All four of these early players are tasked with waiting at the porta-potties. It’s unclear whether that was planned or just dumb luck, but it’s hard not to think that it was the easiest for the producers to orchestrate.
The second round of players includes Alyssa, who works in swimwear and plastic surgery. She also has a knack for writing poetry on the side.
The positive about Alyssa off the bat is that she is not scared to make big moves. One of the significant issues with modern Big Brother is that the houseguests have this habit of following the house.
That doesn’t translate into a good TV show. It’s boring, so Alyssa might be one to watch.
Daniel is a professional Elvis impersonator — something that is sure to irk viewers of the live feed.
We kid, mostly.
Taylor believes she will make it far in the competition because of being a dominant force in her career.
This brings us to Michael, a criminal defense attorney with a Big Brother Bible.
It certainly sounds like we have superfans on the cast, but we’ve heard that countless times in the past, and then we’ve had people like Frenchie, so forgive us for not buying it … yet.
The next group kicks off with Nicole, a private chef with a lot of energy.
We also have Joseph, a lawyer and personal trainer who believes himself to be smarter than people give him credit for.
Fun fact: Joseph was only added to the cast before the premiere because one of the contestants was removed.
We also have Turner, a thrift shop owner who looks cool, but we’ll reserve judgment on him until we see more of what he has to offer.
Brittany is a hypnotherapist, but we don’t learn nearly enough about her to form much of an opinion.
The final group consists of a Chicago bus driver named Terrance, a corporate flight attendant named Indy, a football coach named — wait for it — Pooch, and Ameerah, a Google employee who is adamant about making friends and winning the game.
Pooch didn’t have to compete in any competitions because his ticket revealed him to have a backstage pass. Pretty cool, right?
We later learned that he couldn’t be nominated for the week, wouldn’t participate in the eviction vote, but would be allowed to play in the next HOH competition.
The three competitions were pretty lackluster for a premiere, but the producers evidently wanted to offer some variety.
We can get behind that, but we also want backstabbing and plenty of stakes. Take note, CBS!
Ultimately, Daniel emerged as the first HOH of the summer, and then Julie dropped a bombshell:
Pooch had to choose three people to be “backstage” with him for the week, but the three would be in danger of becoming the first evicted houseguest of the season.
Ultimately, he chose Paloma, Alyssa, and Brittany to join him. He didn’t remember their names, so he pointed at them instead.
