Apple WWDC 2022 highlights–new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with M2 chip, iOS 16, and more

We always love to see what Apple has in store—and we know you do too. From 2 new MacBooks to iOS and watchOS upgrades, here’s everything that Apple announced at WWDC 2022.

From developing a whole new framework of developer community from underprivileged communities to initiating Tech Talks exclusively for developers, Apple has been doing a lot in creating an ever growing 34 million developer community. Today, at the WWDC 2022 keynote, Apple went even further with their upcoming tech announcements that include the iOS 16 with a brand new lock screen, messages, CarPlay support, and more. There is also a new version of the Apple’s original M1 chip with M2 and you’re going to love the new MacBook Air with the M2 chip (plus, the MacBook Pro 13.6″ with M2).

This and the new macOS Ventura, iPadOS 16, and watchOS 9 made the WWDC 2022 packed with a lot of new tech that can make the life of an Apple fan so much easier. Go ahead and get into the details below.

iOS 16

Starting with an all-new lock screen to a personalized Safety Check setup, Apple has rethought this version of the iOS from the ground level. It’s got some of the most requested features we’ve wanted for years and also the coolest stuff we never expected until now.

All-new lock screen–this new version has completely reimagined how the lock screen looks and have looked for so many years. It gives you new ways to make it look more personal based on your choice. You can personalize it by just pressing and holding the screen. You can actually change every element from the time, date, etc. and choose a style or type face you like. In fact, you can actually add a widget gallery you like. Even if you get a lot of notifications, the new lock screen will make all of them look better by rolling them out or hiding them in the screen.

Live Activities–Compact and glanceable experiences for the gazillion notifications that you usually get on your iPhone. Additionally, the Live Activities features can make you make your experiences with apps like Music even better by expanding screens and so much more.

Focus–the new Lock Screen will make you customize your screen based on your focus mode. You can elevate your app experiences with Focus Filters and help you see what you truly want to see.

Messages–You can finally edit any Message you just sent! Or even “Undo Send” if required. And finally, you can actually “Unread” messages and make it easier for you to reply and check messages based on your preference.

SharePlay–From listening to bedtime stories together to listening to the same music, you can now experience your SharePlay directly through FaceTime calls. Additionally, SharePlay is now coming to Messages as well.

Dictation–Being used 18 billion times per month, this is definitely a popular feature in the iPhone. The new dictation features will enable you to switch fluidly between voice and touch. It will also automatically add punctuation to the text.

Live Text in Video–Now you can pause a video in any frame and add text impromptu. The new camera view will let you edit a Live Text even faster and make editing a breeze.

Visual Look-Up–You can actually pick an object from an image and place it as a separate entity without a background.

Wallet–In-app ID verification will now be enabled with necessary privacy features. Sharing keys will now be easier will be a one-tap feature through messages.

With tap to pay on iPhone, you can now pay using contactless payments via Apple Pay. Additionally, you can now use the Apple Pay Later where you can pay for a purchase in four installments. There’s also Order Tracking which will allow you to check all your Apple Pay orders with proper information and status.

Maps–The new Maps will be enabled in a few more countries including France, Switzerland, and more. One of the most requested features is Multistop Routing where you can set up multiple stops and navigate accordingly.

Getting around in Transit will allow to gauge the cost of your trip with direct Apple Pay integration to make it easier for you to load your Wallet without leaving Maps. You can also get an immersive experience with Lookarounds to put things like Street View right in apps like Zillow.

Sports–You can now get live score updates on your new Lock Screen from the Apple TV+ app. Additionally, the Apple News section will now hold a separate section for Sports so that you can get the desired updates without any hassle. This new Sports experience will be available to the US, UK, Canada, and Australia for free.

Family Sharing–With options to add an account privilege for five users at a time, Family Sharing will make it easier for you to manage content across the entire family.

Additionally, Parental Control is way more improved with quick start setups where you can not just control access across apps but also set up screen times with just a single tap.

The best place where you can make the most of the new Family Sharing features is with Photos. From sharing selective photos to ensuring the edited version of a photo is for everyone to enjoy, you can do it all with the new Family Sharing feature.

Safety Check–This has been kept in mind considering abusive relationships which is a new set of settings where you can quickly revoke access to people you’ve already shared your settings with.

From not sharing your location to stop sharing messages, Safety Check is ideal for anyone who would want to revoke access at any given point in time.

Home–A new smart home connectivity standard Matter is now compatible with HomeKit and maintains the highest level of security for your smart home system.

The data is so secure that even Apple can’t see the data you use with this integration. The underlying architecture of the new Home is not just easy to control but also more secure for homes with a lot of smart devices. There are new categories for climate, lights, security, and more that show a quick highlight of the data right from the home screen. You can also set up widgets on the lock screen to view your data easily.

CarPlay–It’s a must have feature when shopping for a vehicle in the US. So, the next-generation CarPlay provides content for all of the driver’s needs. Deep integrations with the car’s setup will let you take actions in your driving experience without leaving the CarPlay app. It actually powers your entire driving setup, keeping your privacy in mind.

watchOS 9

Astronomy face, lunar calendar, play time, metropolitan are the new ones in the list. See more information in a small space. From banner notifications to setting up new metrics for fitness, watchOS 9 will enhance your watch experience even more. You can now set up distance and time intervals that you can quickly repeat as well as heart rate zones. Haptic and voice feedback to tell you when to switch modes while working out. There’s also a new workout type for triathletes that can auto-switch between cycling, swimming, and running.

Additionally, the Sleep App will now show you Sleep Stage in the watchOS 9. It comes with new stages that include REM, Core, and Deep sleep. Adding features to help people diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. watchOS 9 can now track the amount of time your heart spends in A-fib, can identify the time of day or week your A-fib is most active. But what makes this watchOS upgrade even more “Healthy” is the medication alert system. It can track and manage your meds in the iPhone Health app. All you have to do is scan the medication label and introduce it to your reminder system accordingly.

The M2 comes with 5nm, 20 billion transistors, and is 20 percent more than M1. It includes 100Gbps memory bandwidth, and has up to 24GB of unified memory. This chip is 18 percent greater performance than M1 and 1.9x faster performance than the “latest 10-core PC laptop chip.” M2 also has 25 percent more GPU performance than M1 at the same power level, 35 more more at the max power. The new neural engine and secure enclave, new media engine supports 8K video. Systems with M2 will playback multiple streams of 8K and 4K video.

– The strikingly thin design comes with a unibody enclosure that is built to last.

– 20% reduction in volume than the last version – it’s just 11m thin, weighing 2.7lbs.

– Four finishes – Silver, space gray, “starlight,” and “midnight.”

– MagSafe charging is back along with two Thunderbolt ports

– Headphone jacks support high-impedance headphones.

– 13.6″ liquid Retina display

– 25% brighter than before with 500 nits of brightness, 1 billion colors.

– New camera is 1080p with 2x low light performance of outgoing Air

– New mics and speakers, with beamforming mics and Atmos support

– Silent design, with no fan. It comes with a 18-hour video playback battery life.

– New power adapter comes with two USB-C ports that supports fast charge to get to 80 percent in 20 minutes.

MacBook Pro 13-inch with M2

M2 also coming to the 13-inch MacBook Pro. It has no new design for the Pro. It’s the fan that allows the M2 to run faster without thermal throttling.

New MacBook Air starts at $1,199, and the MacBook Pro with M2 $1,399.

macOS Ventura

A new way to keep windows automatically organized with Stage Manager. It is basically a single window mode for apps.

You click on an app, it becomes the single window, and everything else goes off to the left. You can group windows and arrange them and switch between groups. Additionally, Mail also getting new search features. Mail search now has autocorrect and typo correction.

Now coming to Safari, the support of new web standards pushes the web forward. You can share tabs with friends on Safari. Talking about passwords — and replacing them altogether. “Passkeys” use biometrics built into your device. Passkeys will work seamlessly across platforms — the standard is called the Fido Alliance.

Gaming with Metal 3

Metal Effects upscaling lets you run at higher frame rates by rendering lower-res frames and upscaling them. Fast resource loading API that minimized loading time.

Continuity Feature on a Mac and iPhone

You can now hand off FaceTime calls from an iPhone to a Mac.

In fact, you Can now use iPhone as a webcam using continuity. Continuity camera has Center Stage and Portrait Mode support.

Apple is working with Belkin on mounts for iPhone-as-camera setups, which will be coming later this year.

iPadOS 16

New collaboration features lets you kick off a collaboration on a file from a button on the share sheet.

You can share a set of tabs in FaceTime and see what tabs people are looking at in the tab bar.

The demo also shows us a sneak peek at a brand new app called Free Form coming later this year.

Also, “Desktop class apps” are coming to the iPad. To add to this, Reference color mode coming to iPad for photo and video workflows. A new display scaling setting that allows you to increase the display density to see more apps.

This is only available for M1 iPads. The Stage Manager window management is also coming to iPad, along with full external display support.
